Grateful on this Thanksgiving
As we look forward to celebrating Thanksgiving this year, our hearts are full of gratitude for all the people who helped us during this inaugural year as a farm. To our families, thank you for the sweat equity you put in with installing infrastructure, mowing, sowing, planting, harvesting, and financially and morally supporting this endeavor. You were invaluable in getting our operation in and out of the ground.
To our customers, thank you for taking the opportunity to try our produce and eggs. We have enjoyed sharing our harvests, exchanging recipe ideas, and getting to know you during your weekly visits. While there are many choices of where to source your food, you have chosen to support a local farm, and for this, we are grateful. Your generosity empowers us to continue growing healthy, nutrient-dense food for you and your families.

We wish you a healthy and happy Thanksgiving!

Garden Clean Up and Winter Prep
Over the past few weeks, we have been preparing the garden and tunnels for winter. We have removed old plants and debris and flail-mowed most of the beds prior to covering with tarps or mulching with shredded leaves. By covering the beds, we protect the soil from erosion and provide a protected space for the soil organisms to continue breaking down organic matter.
A few days ago, we managed to finally clear tunnel 1, which housed the tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers this year. The clearing began a few weeks ago with Becca and Jordan, students at the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. Our children helped us to clear the rest of the tunnel. And now, the chickens are visiting each day to pick up the scraps. They peck and scratch the soil surface and deposit nitrogen-rich droppings that nourish the soil.
In tunnel 2, we have made progress in planting a couple of more beds of salad greens, onions, spinach, and carrots. The broccoli and kohlrabi are growing, but may not fully develop given the diminishing amount of daylight during this Persephone period. Fingers crossed!

In return, you receive a weekly box of fresh vegetables and eggs throughout the growing season. This model has been used by many small farms to ensure their viability and vitality in providing local communities fresh, nutrient-dense produce.
