Notes from the Farm, Issue 16
September 2023
Farm Update. The whisperings of fall weather can be felt on the farm now. Cool mornings leading to warmer afternoons, then back to cool evenings are becoming more frequent. Yet, there are still hot and humid days, which have ushered in a few surprisingly powerful storms. We have been fortunate to have avoided damage to our crops, tunnels, and barns. We know not all farms are so lucky, some having to shut down early.

The summer growing season has been our best one yet. With the help of our amazing farm crew – Cami, Christiana, and Maddie – we’ve been able to keep on top of things much more than when it’s just the two of us. This has led to greater efficiency and attention to details, such as keeping garden beds weed free, pruning tomato plants for optimum production, and growing and harvesting a lot more produce. As a result, we’ve doubled our booth space at the Holly and Ortonville Farmers Markets and increased the number of members in our CSA.

As we enter the fall months, we will begin removing spent crops, planting cover crops, and tarping sections of the garden to prevent erosion and weed growth. We like the use of cover crops because they keep the soil life active while providing cover. (When a plant is growing, it’s like a little solar panel, providing energy and sugars to the living organisms in the soil. In return, those organisms provide nutrients to the plants.) Come spring, we will terminate the cover crop and incorporate it in the soil, where it will decompose and nourish the soil prior to planting our vegetable crops.
CSA News. Our CSA is currently full, but we are starting our planning for 2024. Have you considered being a part of a community supported agriculture (CSA) program? Do you want to know where your food comes from and how it is grown? Would you like to pick up freshly harvested, naturally grown produce from our farm (or drop off location) each week? Please let us know of your interest by emailing us: bassrootfarm@gmail.com. We have information about the CSA on our website and will be accepting reservations for the 2024 season in just a few months!
