Bass Root Farm Mission - We aim to nourish our local community by producing nutrient dense food while striving to be good stewards of the land using sustainable and regenerative farming methods. We want our farm to be a site for learning, sharing, and cultivating wellness, an ideal place that provides a rich quality of life for all living things.

Notes from the Farm, Issue 10
August 2022
August and Summer’s End. Where did the summer go? I can hardly believe that our children will be off to school this week and I can see and feel the hint of fall in the air. This is the time when we are transitioning to fall crops by turning beds over and preparing them for their final planting. It’s anyone’s guess as to when we’ll have our first frost. Last year, it came late due to the unusually warm fall. Will it happen again this year? Only time will tell. (Pictures of our tomatoes and head lettuce below.)

Fall CSA. Are you interested in a weekly supply of greens with a few other vegetables? Consider joining our Fall CSA! (CSA stands for “community supported agriculture” in which members of the community purchase shares in a local farm in exchange for produce.) The “Fall Showcase” share will run from September 22 – November 22 (10 weeks) and will feature 4-6 items consisting of greens (e.g., salad mix, arugula, spinach) and one or two vegetables (e.g., radish, onion, carrot). Total price of the share is $250 ($25/week). To learn more about the CSA program, please click on the link below and read the document found on our website.

Laura Custer, Farm Volunteer. We were fortunate to receive an email from Plymouth resident Laura Custer about her interest in volunteering on our farm. A native of Valparaiso, Indiana (where Michael spent some years attending university and teaching), Laura was eager to dive right into helping us for a week while her children attended Camp Ohiyesa. She did everything from weeding to planting to harvesting. Thanks Laura for all of your help!

Jackie Edgemon, Farm Intern. Many thanks to Jackie Edgemon for serving as farm intern this summer. A graduate student in the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health, Jackie provided nutrition cards for our CSA members and helped us with all aspects of the farm. He truly helped us in expanding our production to meet the demands of our sales outlets. We will miss him and wish him great success as he returns to school in September.

Bass Root Farm Stand Is Open on Saturdays: Have you visited the Farm Stand on Saturdays from 12:00-3:00? This is a great opportunity to visit the place where we grow our produce and raise our chickens for eggs. The Farm Stand will be open through August and September. Hope to see you there and please tell your friends and family members!

Holly Farmers Market. We are currently a seasonal vendor at the Holly Farmers Market, held in Crapo Park from 10:00-2:00 on Sundays. This market has grown considerably over the past couple of years and features over 70 vendors. Consider making your weekly grocery run at the market and support your local farmers and artisans. Buying local helps to keep your dollars in the community and helps the environment.

Eggplant. This month's featured vegetable is the eggplant. Considered the "mad apple" by 16th Century botanists, this Old World fruit belongs to the nightshade family, like tomatoes. It contains small amounts of most vitamins and minerals and is low in calories. It can be used in a variety of ways including being used in soups, pureed, stewed, stuffed, fried, grilled, roasted, and pickled. Here is a sample recipe for an easy meal.
